Professional Bio

Dr George Wong is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP). He completed seven years of schooling in England, then spent a decade in Australia for medical school and specialist training. Along the way, he spent two years on published research into a cardiac medication in diabetes.

His work in the acute mental health service in Hervey Bay shapes how he practises privately: a thorough assessment, a clear explanation of what is going on, and a plan the patient understands. He sees adults across the broad range of general psychiatry, including mood and anxiety disorders, psychotic illness, trauma-related presentations and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Dr Wong is interested in understanding a person beyond their diagnosis. He gives as much weight to the social, psychological and cultural context of a presentation as to its symptoms. He is comfortable working with patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and consults in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese.

He is a committed teacher who supervises junior doctors and still teaches medical students in his own time. Outside the clinic, he enjoys cooking, is a former competitive fencer, and is a long-time traveller to Japan with an abiding interest in its history and culture.
