Possible signs may include difficulty sustaining attention, disorganisation, forgetfulness, excessive fidgeting, impulsivity and difficulty completing tasks.

  • Consider how symptoms affect daily life

In adults, ADHD may be associated with difficulties with organisation, time management, sustained attention, restlessness, forgetfulness and task completion. These are possible symptoms, not diagnostic criteria on their own.

  • Seek an appropriate assessment if symptoms affect functioning

ADHD assessment in Australia may involve a psychiatrist, paediatrician or appropriately qualified psychologist, depending on the person’s age, circumstances and the clinician’s role.

  • Share relevant family and developmental history

Information about ADHD in parents, siblings or other close relatives can help clinicians understand the person’s background.

  • Consider whether ADHD may have gone unrecognised in the family

Some adults may only recognise possible ADHD traits in themselves after their child is assessed.

  • Remember that genetic risk does not determine the outcome

Having a family history of ADHD increases the likelihood of ADHD but does not mean that a person will necessarily develop it.

Myth #03: Television and video games cause ADHD

Current evidence does not support screen or video-game exposure as a primary cause of ADHD.

Myth #04: If a child has ADHD, one of their parents must have it too

Not necessarily.
