What is depression?
According to the Department of Health Australia, an estimated 7.3 million people aged 16 to 85 years will experience mental illness at some stage of their life. Many do not even recognize that they have this condition nor are they aware that this can be treated very effectively. On average, more than nine people in Australia take their own lives every day.
We all feel sad or discouraged at times. Most people go through unfortunate experiences such as a severe illness, loss of a job, a divorce, or death of any family member. These feelings of pain tend to get less intense over time.
Depression occurs when feelings of despair or deep sadness last for at least two weeks or more, and they interfere with your daily activities such as a change in your eating and sleeping habits or work routine. Depressed people tend to feel helpless and blame themselves for having these miserable feelings. Some may even have thoughts of suicide or death if their depression is prolonged and left untreated.
What Causes Depression?
Depression can be caused by the changes in your body’s chemistry that influences thought processes and mood. Some serious chronic illnesses, such as cancer or heart disease, can also be accompanied by depression. For many people, depression indicates a lack of balance in certain emotional and mental aspects of life.
Many life stressors, such as the loss of a job or the death of a loved one, can contribute significantly to depression. Other factors that lead to a lack of self-esteem or loss of identity can also contribute. The causes of depression are not always apparent, but in many cases, they show up after careful evaluation and diagnosis by a mental health professional.
Can Depression be Treated Successfully?
Absolutely. Depression is treatable if a person receives the appropriate mental health care.
However, there is still a stigma attached with seeking help for mental health issues, including depression. Unfortunately, feelings of depression are often confused with sadness and viewed as a sign of weakness, hoping that a person will feel better with time. The fact is people with any kind of depression cannot just start to feel and react better unless they seek professional help. Unexpressed emotions and feelings accompanied by a sense of feeling alone and not sharing anything with anyone can worsen the condition.
